How to Learn Vedas
I think the way to learn Vedas is one mantra at a time.
- Vedic sanskrit in written form is a continuous set of letters. You cannot learn it by reading the text alone.
- Where the words have to be broken is important. Take the english example: together OR to-get- her? The meaning changes.
- To know this you must “listen” to the Vedas, many times, only then you will know which letters are grouped into words. if you want keep the sanskrit text in front of you.
- One of the links on this page, is a video of a teacher teaching his young students the first set of mantras of the Rig veda. Listen to it a 108 times or so. If your mother tongue is any Indian Language, and if you have been brought up in any Ancient Indian philiosphy, many words will become clear to you on listening.
- Translations by Colonial Europeans and their Indian followers, (Griffith etc…), take a purely materialist view – they did not ‘get’ the Vedas, they only ‘get’ its poetry. You will not understand why people like Jaimini said that the Vedas are too perfect to be questioned, and how he wrote his mimamsa and katha upanishad as an extension to the Vedas
- Look for translations where available, by Aurobindo or someone who has carried on his work, either in English or in your Mother Tongue. It does not matter which country the translator is from. What matters is which tradition he or she followed.
- If you know how to meditate, then meditate on the mantras, then the meaning will become clearer to you.
- I plan to to take up one mantra at a time. I will share what I find with you.
Update : I have recently found a Veda Guru.. and it is a million times better to learn Vedic Chanting from a guru than all by ourselves. It is also important to learn the Vedangas, if one is to understand the Vedas. (Look for other posts on this blog-site on Vedangas)
Caution : I am student and not a guru.. these are my notes.
