Gayatri Mantram : Vedic Swaras Vs Popular Ragas
For the background and meaning of the Gayatri mantram, please click here.
The Gayatri Mantram that is blared across the loudspeakers and sung in racy tunes, is not as per Vedic Swaras and therefore is of no use to a serious student like yourself. To me, it is slightly annoying, it is popularisation at the cost of authenticity. Look for a good source, that is sung in the correct chandas, with correct Vedic Swaras and in a clear and good voice. If I find it, I shall provide a link.
Update : My Veda Guru has brought out a set of CDs as chanted by her Veda Guru, containing all the Rg Veda Mantras. My co-student told me that this is the closest to the style followed in Sringeri Matam.
It has been brought out by the Sadyojatha Charitable Trust. Vidyaranyapura Bangalore – 97.
I have found that it is beneficial to hear the guruji’s chanting and I can clearly see the difference in his chanting and other popular versions.
That said there are valid chanting styles belonging to different maTAs across the country, each following a different but authentic method.
The set of CDs costs around Rs 1400.

Is there any website to see these CD’s collection. Can you provide more details to buy these.

There is no web-site yet to my knowledge. If you are in Bangalore you can buy them at the gurukula in Vidyaranyapura. The CDs are locked and therefore they can play only in some players and computers.. The entire Rg Veda is available for Rs 1400. As a student at the gurukula, I got a student discount and bought the set for Rs 1200.
If you are very much interested I can find out for you.

I talked to my guru yesterday.
She said that if a draft to cover the cost plus shipping, was sent to her address, she could mail the CDs… but then she was thinking of India at the time.
I’ll inquire about USA.
The CDs can be shipped to Hyderabad or Vizag via GOI Postal Services or through some couriers.
The Address is Veda, Vedanta, Vedanga Gurukula, Sadyojata Charitable Trust, No 40, Venugopal Layout, Vidyaranyapura, Bangalore 560097
)
The printed price is Rs 1500 (not 1400, sorry that was my mistake
The draft has to be made out to Sadyojata Charitable Trust.
There is an option called VPP, which I use when I order books.. I phone the folks give them my address, then they mail it and I pay the postman the cash amount when I get the books. I am not sure yet how it works from the sender’s side…
