from: reference

The most ancient literature, the Brahmanas accept the Vedas as authority.

Vedic concepts are expanded in the Upanishads and in the systems of Indian Philosophy.

  1. Vaisesika of Kanada
  2. Nyaya of Gauthama
  3. Sankhya of Kapila
  4. Yoga of Patanjali
  5. Purva Mimamsa of Jaimini
  6. Uttaramimamsa of Badarayana Vyasa.

The Veda is a sruti and not a sastra. A sastra is a set if systematized knowledge with a scientific terminology. For understanding the nature of the sruti, the Vedangas and the Upa Vedas were evolved.

The vedangas are,

  1. Siksha (orthography: the art of writing words with the proper letters, according to accepted usage; correct spelling.)
  2. Vyakarana (grammar)
  3. Nighantu (lexicon)
  4. Jyotis (astronomy)
  5. Chandas (prososdy)
  6. Kalpa (the system of rituals).

The Upa Vedas are

  1. Ayurveda (medicine)
  2. Gandharva Veda (aesthetics)
  3. Dhanur Veda (defence)
  4. Arthaveda (economics)
