Systems of Indian Philosophy and Vedangas
from: reference
The most ancient literature, the Brahmanas accept the Vedas as authority.
Vedic concepts are expanded in the Upanishads and in the systems of Indian Philosophy.
- Vaisesika of Kanada
- Nyaya of Gauthama
- Sankhya of Kapila
- Yoga of Patanjali
- Purva Mimamsa of Jaimini
- Uttaramimamsa of Badarayana Vyasa.
The Veda is a sruti and not a sastra. A sastra is a set if systematized knowledge with a scientific terminology. For understanding the nature of the sruti, the Vedangas and the Upa Vedas were evolved.
The vedangas are,
- Siksha (orthography: the art of writing words with the proper letters, according to accepted usage; correct spelling.)
- Vyakarana (grammar)
- Nighantu (lexicon)
- Jyotis (astronomy)
- Chandas (prososdy)
- Kalpa (the system of rituals).
The Upa Vedas are
- Ayurveda (medicine)
- Gandharva Veda (aesthetics)
- Dhanur Veda (defence)
- Arthaveda (economics)
