The Best Veda : Sama, Rk or Yajur?
Sri Krishna said that of all the Vedas he is Sama Veda, clearly indicating that it was the best of the Vedas.
sAyaNA said that Yajur Veda was like the wall on which Rk and Sama were pictures.. implying that the matras of the Rk and Sama were like subsets of the Yajur Mantras.
It is Max Mueller who imagined that the Rg mantras were older than mantras of the other two Vedas (without any basis as he himself stated..) even though, 80% of the mantras are common!!
This led to the western and later the English-Educated-Indian fascination with the Rg Veda.
Perhaps also it did not have the swaras of the sama nor the yajnas of the yajur.. so it was easier for the occidentals.
