pancha mahaa yagnyas
The 5 mahayajnaas are those done for :
- Devatas
- Cows
- Atithis (unexpected guests)
- Bhutas (beings)
- brahmanas.
Yagnya (yajna) comes from the verb root ‘yaj’ meaning ‘to worship’.
Often it is used in the sense of ‘tyaj’ meaning ‘to give up’.
Another definition is dEva pUjA sangati karanam yagnyam.
This is as explained to me by my Veda Guru.

Just to share : Balinese Hinduism is based on Pancamaha – Yadnas ( their spelling)which are sacred Duties towards: Deva ( Deities), Bhoota (Nature ) Manushya ( Society) Rishi ( Teachers) and Piris ( Ancestors). Without performing these Duties, they do not think the Godhead ( Sang Hyang Widi Wasa – or our Brahman)will protect or bless them. Hence, neverending rituals !
